Pick Your Moments

There are obviously times when you need some chocolate and we can't fool ourselves into thinking we won't ever have any, right?! So that means we need a backup plan for the times we do want something the isn't so great for our waistline.

Here are a few suggestions on how we can control our sweets:
  1. Have What You Want. That might sound ridiculous, but most of the time we spend time telling ourselves we can't have that piece of cake, and instead we raid the kitchen and eat "around" it by mindlessly eating, and then after we've eaten the Popsicles, yogurt, and graham crackers, we finally cave in and have some cake because "we blew it all anyways." So have what you really want, if it's what you really want. Make sure you're not eating it just because it's sitting there.
  2. Pick Your Moments. This goes along with the first one, but save those sweet tooth times for the times you need them most. Maybe you want your "times" to be at birthday parties, or maybe if you go out to lunch with your friend. Maybe you don't care about social eating but you want to have that piece of cake all alone when you've had a really hard day. (I mean a really hard day, because you can't have that cake everyday :)
  3. The most enjoyment comes from the first few bites only. Think about it, you really enjoy something the first few bites, but past that it's just repetitive and your taste buds are used to it and it doesn't have the same effect. You probably keep eating it for comfort or because you don't want to waste it. But when you're eating something sweet, take your time and actually enjoy what you're eating. Don't waste your sweets on shoving M&M's in your mouth while you're watching a movie. Don't multitask while you're eating it. Enjoy it and STOP when you're satisfied and the next bite isn't as amazing as the bite before. Just try it, you'll feel much better about yourself afterwards. You'll feel in control and won't be afraid of sweets.
