FoodSmart

The Thin Commandments uses the term FOODSMART.  It means picking foods that give you volume but allow you to eat more often.  A high volume food is one that is very satisfying but not high in calories.  It keeps your blodd sugar stable and helps stop cravings.

An example is a tiny steak, which is low in volume or size, but very high in calories.  But a 2-pound lobster with pomodoro sauce or with a teaspoon of butter has less calories.

Here are a few other choices that are high in volume, but low in calories.

  • White-meat fish and seafood: shrimp, crabmeat, lobster, scallops, cod, mussels, sole, orange roughy flounder, skate, char, snapper.
  • Egg whites: egg white omlets, plain or with low-calorie cheese or vegetables.
  • High-calcium diary foods: low/fat-free yogurt, milk, low-fat/fat free cheese (cottage, ricotta, cream, American), protein shakes
  • Nonstarchy green and white vegetables: broccoli, green beans, asparagus artichokes, spinach, lettuce, cauliflower, zucchini, and cabbage.
  • Soups: made from green and white vegetables and fat-free broth.
  • High-fiber bran crackers
Of course there are high volume foods other than these but these are just a few ideas.  When you're fixing your meals, or eating out, this is a good thing to think about.  Think of getting foods that are high in volume, yet low in calories.
