This concept to, "Think Historically, Not Just Calorically," is from The Thin Commandments book. I read it as a Freshman in college (yes, I've always bought books like this :) and I forgot how much I loved it and what useful information is in it.
This thought is used when placed with a choice of which dessert to eat. Thinking HISTORICALLY means knowing your history and what your TRIGGERS are. Triggers are foods that are your weaknesses and once you eat them, you instantly want more. My triggers are baked goods. I have one, and I want more. But ice cream is a safe food for me. I'm satisfied with a just a bowl.
An example is the decision between a chocolate chip cookie and a piece of cheesecake. We all know that cheesecake is much higher in fat and calories than a chocolate chip cookie. But what if you've found that you can't stop yourself when you have a cookie? And instead of eating one, you eat six, not including the dough. By the time you've eaten all six cookies and the dough, it's way more calories than the one piece of cheesecake.
So when you're faced with a choice of two foods, think of your history and choose the one that you'll be SATISFIED with and won't want MORE afterwards. Even though initially it might seem like more calories, it will save you in the end.
